Leading teams dominate South Sumatra Governor Cup

The silver medallists at last month’s Asian Beach Volleyball Championships in Sydney snatched two victories on Thursday. The Australian duo first outclassed Thailand 2’s Rumpaipruet Numwong/ Khanittha Hongpak in straight sets (21-14, 21-18) before mercilessly crushing Indonesians Normalita Normalita/ Martha Rahawarin in a one-sided battle 21-11, 21-7. With a clean sweep of three matches in Pool C, the Aussies now go up against Ng Tin Lai/ Wong Yuen Mei from Hong Kong in Friday’s quarterfinals. Making it three in a row in Pool D were Thailand 1’s Varapatsorn Radarong/ Tanarattha Udomchavee, who on Thursday pulled off a scintillating 21-9, 21-7 win over Hong Kong’s Ng Tin Lai/ Wong Yuen Mei and went on to beat Chinese Taipei’s Liu Pi Hsin/ Chang Ya Chu 21-11, 21-10. The Thai pair, silver medallists at the 2014 Asian Games in Korea and the Asian Beach Games on home soil in Phuket the same year, are next due to take on Indonesians Dhita Juliana/ Putu Dini Jasita Utami in Friday’s quarterfinals. Kazakhstan’s Tatyana Mashkova/ Irina Tsimbalova, gold medallists at the Asian Beach Games in 2014 who registered two wins on the opening day, also continued their unbeaten run on Thursday, beating Chinese Taipei’s Wu Shu-Fen/ Kou Nai-Han 21-15, 21-13 to top Pool B. In the men’s competition, stronger teams brushed off their rivals to keep their hopes of advancing to Friday’s quarterfinals alive. New Zealand’s Samuel O’Dea/ Michael Watson came from behind to beat Thailand’s Kitti Duangjinda/ Sedtawat Padsawud 2-1 (18-21, 21-19, 15-12), while Alexandr Dyachenko/ Alexey Sidorenko of Kazakhstan 1, gold medallists at the 2014 Asian Games, beat Indonesians Rendy Verdian Licardo/ Danangsyah Yudistira Pribadi 21-18, 21-13 on Thursday morning and repeated the feat in the afternoon with a 21-12, 21-8 victory over Singaporeans Shen Fan Yang Mark/ Yio Guang Fa Benjamin. Australians Cole Durant/ Bo Soderberg, silver medallists at the Asian Championships last month, bagged two wins in succession on Thursday. The Aussies first powered past Thailand’s Surin Jongklang/ Dunwinit Kaewsai 21-14, 21-11 before thrashing Maldives’ Adnan Abdul Hameed/ Adam Naseem 21-16, 21-13.
